Tracing the Roots of Chuck-A-Luck
The latest generation may not be quite familiar with the dice game called chuck-a-luck. This game was invented centuries ago and only a handful of casinos offer chuck-a-luck. However, the influence of this game to the more modern dice games is all part of the history of gambling; from the crude to the high-tech, as they say.
Playing chuck-a-luck only requires a few materials. It is a game that uses a wire cage and three standard dice. The wire cage can be varied with a metal or cone-shaped chute; others used leather chute or as others may call it, a horn.
The tinhorn gamblers were the ones who were believed to have used the metal chutes in playing chuck-a-luck. These gamblers usually do not have much money and their choice of using metal over leather was due to the fact that they were cheap. The very first versions of playing the game was by throwing or chucking the dice; hence the name chuck-a-luck. The welded metal bird cage that represents the chute became the standard version of the chute or horn where the dealers are the only ones allowed to turn it.
Chuck-a-luck's cage have been replaced with sorts of bird cage tumblers. As long as there are three dice and a tumbler to chuck them, a game of chuck-a-luck can be played right away. Other gambling games like Hi/Lo also use a cage but the number of dice varies.
Chuck-a-luck is an old dice game that was invented in English bars. It was called "sweat cloth" and it was introduced in the United States sometime in the 1800's with the name "sweat". During the later parts of the 1800's there were other popularized names for chuck-a-luck were "chuck", "chucker-luck" and "chuck-luck". The name "birdcage" was named only after the 1900's and then the game was eventually named "chuck-a-luck".
The game of "sweat" was played with a use of a cup and three dice that were thrown. However, cheating allegations by the gaming operators back then replaced the use of cups into a birdcage-like gadget. This gadget was used by the dealer by flipping it a couple of times and the outcome would be shown as the cage and the dice stopped.
The game of chuck-a-luck took a more complex structure another variety of dice game which is the Grand Hazard. The distinction between the two lies on the layout.
Nowadays the chuck-a-luck has been overshadowed by more popular and modern versions of dice games. But the beginnings of the game come a long way and certainly has brought with it the influence and the structure of the modern dice game.
